Elk River

Elk River, Monterville, WV 26294

The Elk River, called “The Lady” by locals, drains from Cheat Mountain and Gauley Mountain on the Randolph and Pocahontas County line. The Elk River is West Virginia’s premier trout fishery and fly-fisherman’s paradise. The river’s name most likely comes from the Native Americans of the area who saw great numbers of elk near the stream.

The Elk River is a tributary of the Kanawha River which extends 177 miles long. The river flows through some of West Virginia’s most rugged and remote terrain. The Upper Elk is a geological marvel. There are many caves, streams, waterfalls, including a six-mile stretch in Randolph County where the river sinks underground during dry weather. With a mix of wild and stocked trout of huge sizes (some of the largest in the state), the Upper Catch & Release area is prime trout fishing.

The Elk River covers the regions where traditions survive harboring authentic mountain musicians, dancers, and craftsmen. If you plan to visit the Elk River, be sure to stay at the seclusive Elk Springs Resort and eat at the on-site restaurant after a fun day of fishing. If you want to find the best spots, hire a guide at the Elk Springs Resort to help you tackle the infamous stretch of the Elk River.
