Maplewood Cemetery

Maplewood Cemetery is a cultural feature in Elkins. Five famous memorials are located here. There are three very important figures buried here who played a vital role in the founding of Elkins, West Virginia.

Henry G Davis was instrumental in the continued, financial growth of the West Virginia Central and Pittsburgh Railroad. He, along with Republican son-in-law Stephen Benton Elkins, co-founded Davis and Elkins College in Elkins, West Virginia. Stephen B Elkins was captain in the Kansas Militia, Civil War; served as Attorney General of the Territory of New Mexico, 1867; and a Delegate to Congress from the Territory of New Mexico, 1873-1877. He is the father of Senator Davis Elkins. Senator Davis Elkins served as Assistant Adjutant General during the Spanish and Indian War in the 1st Virginia Volunteer Infantry, US Army. After the war, he pursued in railroads, banking, utilities, and coal mining interest and was appointed as a Republican to the United States Senate to fill the vacancy caused by the death of his father.
