Spruce Knob

Spruce Knob, located in Pendleton County, is most famous for being the highest point in West Virginia. Just a stone’s throw away from Randolph County, Spruce Knob is also the highest point on the Allegheny Mountains and the Appalachian Plateaus. About a 15-minute drive from the peak, Spruce Knob Lake and Campground are located in Randolph County. Spruce Knob Lake is the highest lake in the state.
Spruce Knob is located within the Monongahela National Forest and is also a part of the Spruce Knob-Seneca Rocks National Recreation Area. This was the first National Recreation Area designated as part of the USDA Forest Service. Nearby Seneca Rocks sets the stage for one of the best rock climbing areas on the East Coast.
Spruce Knob can be attained by driving well-maintained forest roads. A short, 0.5 mile loop trail called Whispering Spruce Trail leads to a public observation tower constructed of stone and steel. The trail is an easy walk and has a variety of opportunities for scenery and views. Vault toilets, picnic tables, grills and vehicle parking complete the facilities available at the tower. Toilets are closed in winter.
There are two campgrounds located close by for individuals looking to escape to the area for an extended stay. Spruce Knob Lake Campground is located nearby offering close access to Spruce Knob Lake for boating and fishing opportunities. Gatewood Campground is also close, offering group camping sites. Visitors looking to camp in a more remote location are welcome to backpack the 60 miles of trail offered in nearby Spruce Knob – Seneca Creek Backcountry.
