SUMMARY:Almost Heaven Star Party
DESCRIPTION:The Almost Heaven Star Party\, organized by the Northern Virginia Astronomy Club\, begins on Friday\, September 3\, 2021 and ends the morning of Tuesday\, September 7th. The star party takes advantage of the location of the Spruce Knob Mountain Center which features some of the darkest skies on the east coast. Almost 300 star gazers and amateur astronomers gather on our campus to spend four nights exploring the night sky.\nOver the course of the weekend there will be exploration and adventure events during the day — hiking\, caving\, canoeing and excursion train adventures. SUMMARY:Rosie the Riveter Celebration @ Elkins Town Square Amphitheater
DESCRIPTION:Our Town is planning a Rosie the Riveter celebration on Labor Day\, Monday\, September 6 to celebrate those women who were the backbone of our homefront military effort during WW II.  The event is scheduled to occur at the Rotary Amphitheater beginning at 12 noon.  Those of all ages who are attending are welcome to bring a chair\, a blanket\, a sun umbrella and a lunch as we celebrate this day. .  There will be presentations\, music\, dance and participant involvement. Everyone will be asked to bring a bell of any size to join in the world wide bell ringing ceremony at  1 pm.  Those coming dressed as the stereotypical Rosie will be eligible for door prizes.  This event is a national and international celebration and Elkins wants to be part of the recognition for these special women\, many from our area and a few who still live among us. See our flyer which will be forthcoming in the near future.

SUMMARY:Cass Bald Knob Trip @ Cass Scenic Railroad State Park
DESCRIPTION:Boarding Location – Cass Depot (not Elkins) \n\n12363 Cass Road\nCass\, WV 24927 \n\nTrip Summary \nThe long haul of 11 miles to Bald Knob takes about four and a half hours for the 22-mile round trip. Panoramas of the lofty Appalachians become more beautiful as the train climbs higher and higher. Passengers suddenly realize they are entering a completely different world\, mainly because of the change in trees\, flowers and atmosphere. By climbing the 2\,390 feet from Cass (2452-feet) to Bald Knob (4842-feet) on Back Allegheny Mountain and second highest point in West Virginia\, passengers have made the equivalent to an 800 mile trip to Canada in climate because of the higher altitude. Here are found spruce trees\, snowshoe hares and other plants and animals typical in the far north. The rustic overlook affords one of the most awesome\, overwhelming spectacles in the cast. Dwarfed by distance and almost lost in the vastness of the panorama is the giant Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope\, the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope\, at the Green Bank Observatory in the valley near the foot of the mountain. A remarkable contrast between the wilderness at Bald Knob and today’s space-age facilities! \nA “King of the Road” hobo lunch will be provided to enjoy with your ride as well. The hobo lunch consists of a cold sandwich (lunch meat\, cheese\, etc. all separated in plastic wrap)\, chips\, cookie\, and bottled water. A ride on the Cass Scenic Railroad is an unforgettable experience for the whole family.
