DESCRIPTION:Blooming Adventures: Garden Stories Collected by and of Zora Neale Hurston is a special summer storytime presented by the Beverly Heritage Center in partnership with Elkins-Randolph Public Library’s Beverly Heritage Branch! \nBe inspired by a celebrated\, 20th-century artist\, Zora Neale Hurston. Her personal and collected stories spring with an appreciation for the natural world as a place full of wonder\, wisdom and adventures. Dig into Zora’s creative visionary legacy through folk narratives retold by Master Storyteller and Published Poet\, Diane Macklin. From dancing colors to arbor kinships\, these stories will delight any creative spirit\, wonder-full heart\, or vivid imagination! \nMore about Diane Macklin \nDiane Macklin has dedicated over two decades to the art of storytelling and listening. She engages audiences with a dynamic\, theatrical style\, blended with her background in education\, dance and cultural mediation. She has performed from Massachusetts to California for venues such as: International Storytelling Center’s Exchange Place\, FL Storytelling Festival\, National Docent Symposium\, National Park Service\, various Smithsonian museums in DC\, plus a host of venues where people gather. Her published work has received honorable mention from the Passager Poetry Contest 2024. She is also the 2022 Speak Story Telling Series Commission recipient; 2018 winner of the Jackie Torrence Tall Tale Contest for the NABS’s Festival and Conference; and Taft Museum’s 2013 Robert S. Duncanson Artist-in-Residence. Diane lives as a narrative enthusiast fully invested in the ancient power of storytelling to transform; heal; and explore the unique\, yet universal elements of humanity. As a performer\, workshop presenter\, key note speaker\, and teaching artist\, Diane aims to “Make a Difference\, One Story at a Time!”

DESCRIPTION:This wilderness excursion features mountain grades\, an “S” curve tunnel\, a high bridge and miles of unspoiled mountain views. Vintage diesel-powered locomotives climb along the cascading Shavers Fork of the Cheat River to the High Falls of Cheat. Enjoy the view relaxing aboard our comfortable climate controlled passenger coaches. \nThis vintage diesel-powered passenger train has gained a reputation as one of the most relaxing mountain wilderness excursions in our Mountain Rail Adventure portfolio. The 4-hour\, 46 mile round trip departs at 11 a.m. from the restored Elkins Depot on Railroad Avenue. \nOn the trip to the Falls\, enjoy a cold cut lunch\, which is included in the ticket price. The trip culminates at the High Falls of Cheat\, an 18′ high\, 150′ wide waterfall located in one of the most remote and pristine settings in the region. DESCRIPTION:Diane Macklin will present a storytelling workshop based around the life and work of Zora Neale Hurston\, noted author\, folklorist\, and anthropologist. \nHurston’s works\, which include Their Eyes Were Watching God\, are cornerstones of American literature\, often centering on Black American community and culture. Zora Neale Hurston worked for the WPA Federal Writer’s Project during the Great Depression\, and she collected stories throughout the American South and Appalachia\, later published in various works and collections\, including The American Guide. \nAt this special event\, Diane Macklin will share Zora’s stories and encourage participants to share their own\, joining the rich history of Zora’s art and our local traditions in a celebration of storytelling and humanity. \nTickets (link under Details section) \nWorkshop Only: Free!
