Set in the aftermath of a devastating civil war\, The Burial at Thebes pits the newly crowned King Creon\, determined to secure a fragile peace\, against his defiant niece Antigone\, who is driven by love\, grief\, and an unwavering sense of duty to her family. When Antigone challenges Creon’s decree by honoring her fallen brother with burial rites\, a tragic chain of events is set in motion. As personal conviction collides with political authority\, no one escapes the consequences.\nThroughout the play\, Heaney invokes the tradition of keening\, a form of vocal lament historically practiced in Ireland and Scotland.
