SUMMARY:Fasnacht
DESCRIPTION:Helvetia’s Fasnacht\, sometimes described as the Mardi Gras of Appalachia\, is a Swiss celebration held near the end of winter. German for “fasting night\,” Fasnacht is meant to serve as the grand hurrah before Catholics who are practicing Lent give up fatty foods and other physical comforts until Easter. \nStarting in the afternoon\, you will be able to join in jam sessions\, listen to the sound of community coming together to eat and be merry\, or browse through the local shops and mask museum. \nIn the later part of the evening\, a parade featuring large\, often frightening\, artistic masks travels from the Red Hall to the Community Hall where the costumes are judged\, and a square dance begins. \nAt midnight the effigy of Old Man Winter is cut down from the ceiling of the Community Hall\, carried on the shoulders of the celebrants to the bonfire outside\, and burned to signal the end of Winter.

SUMMARY:WINTER WALK
DESCRIPTION:The Elkins Tree Board will sponsor a Winter Walk\, Saturday\, February 18 at 10 a.m. at Glendale Park\, Elkins. The public will learn how to identify trees by bark\, twigs\, shape\, and fruit during this free workshop led by tree board forester Linda Burke. When leaves are no longer present on trees\, it can be a daunting task learning to identify trees in the winter. However\, there are features other than leaves that can help differentiate tree species from one another. Also on hand will be birder Jim Fregonara to assist with bird identification along the way. Participants should meet at the first pavilion at the entrance of Glendale Park. Dress warmly and bring binoculars. Check Elkins Friends of Trees FB page for any weather-related updates.

SUMMARY:Cooking in Community: Dumplings
DESCRIPTION:Augusta is presenting a new series of foodways classes in Elkins\, WV! The classes will be taught by experienced chefs and home cooks from a variety of cultures represented in Appalachia today. Classes will cover specific dishes such as arepas\, adobo\, tomato sauce\, meatballs\, pizzelles\, pepperoni rolls\, dumplings\, fried chicken\, and collard greens\, as well as addressing topics such as cooking fresh in food deserts\, using local seasonal ingredients and canning and pickling techniques. Students can expect to come away from each class with hands-on knowledge about how to make a dish and hopefully a deeper understanding of the importance of that dish to the people whose kitchens it sprang from. \nWhat are foodways?\nFoodways are more than food itself — they are the beliefs and context surrounding food\, the person-to-person teaching of its preparation\, as well as the community in which the food is enjoyed. The passing down of food traditions from one generation to the next is an integral piece of a community’s identity and culture. We use food to deepen community ties\, celebrate important holidays\, mark milestones\, and enrich our lives. A community’s values are readily communicated in the ways that food is celebrated and shared within it. \nRegistration link – https://augustaartsandculture.org/cooking-in-community…/ \nThis project is made possible by Mid Atlantic Arts’ Central Appalachia Living Traditions program.
