Flexible class scheduling will allow you to study across these seminal American genres or take a deep dive into your favorite – you create your schedule! Cajun & Creole classes\, organized by coordinator Lynne Terr\, will feature masters from Louisiana in everything from accordion to cooking. Ginny Hawker leads the Classic Country programming with opportunities for playing in bands\, perfecting your instrument technique or dialing in your country vocals. Swing classes\, led by Wes Crawford\, will give you a chance to dust off your chops on guitar\, brass\, vocals and more. And\, of course\, the dance pavilion will be hopping every night with Cajun\, zydeco\, honky-tonk and swing dancing to rival the best you’ve ever seen. \nThe Augusta Dance Intensive will give broad training in dance traditions from several different cultures – including lindy hop\, swing\, flatfooting and Cajun – as well as a strong foundation in Dunham technique for modern dance with Laurie Goux. \nFolk Arts for Kids will give participants (ages 5 to 11) a chance to explore craft\, nature\, music and dance in a fun and immersive environment. \nDo you want to get just a taste of Augusta after work? During the three weeks Augusta was scheduled to take place\, we’ll be presenting live events daily\, including cultural sessions\, panel discussions and virtual music-making. From July 6-24\, we’re putting together a comprehensive schedule of events allowing you the opportunity to interact in real-time with Augusta instructors and fellow students. \nConcerts and student showcases! DESCRIPTION:This concert will feature the music and dance pieces that the Davis & Elkins College Appalachian Ensemble has been working on this semester\, including several new pieces of choreography and new songs. \nNov 21\, 2019. 7:30pm. Harper McNeeley Auditorium at the Myles Center for the Arts. FREE admission. \nThe Davis & Elkins College Appalachian Ensemble\, a student performance group led by String Band Director Emily Miller and Dance Directors Laurie Goux and Madalyn Humphrey\, is dedicated to bringing live traditional music and dance to audiences in West Virginia and beyond. Composed entirely of students attending D&E\, the group features an acoustic string band (fiddle\, banjo\, guitar\, bass and mandolin) and a team of dancers with a diverse range of expertise. \nThe group focuses on the intersections of different American vernacular forms and their roots\, ranging from old-time music and flatfooting to jazz music and tap dance\, to Irish sean nós dance\, body percussion and numerous traditional American styles of harmony singing. The performances include a variety of regional dance styles\, contemporary choreography\, and a selection of traditional songs and tunes. \n***During construction\, the best place to park is behind the Myles Center for the Arts and come up the big outside staircase. If you need wheelchair access\, please park in the chapel lot and proceed up the sidewalk to the left of the fitness center. You can then turn right down the hallway and pass through the construction area to the auditorium.***

DESCRIPTION:Davis & Elkins College will host two-term Gilbert-Chappell Distinguished Poet for the Eastern Region of North Carolina and award-winning poet John Hoppenthaler for the 21st annual D&E Writers’ Series. Events planned for Wednesday and Thursday\, a writer’s workshop\, poetry reading and book signing\, are free and open to the public. \nThe workshop runs from 4:30 – 6 p.m. Wednesday in the Community Room of Booth Library and is open to anyone interested in enhancing their creative writing skills. Hoppenthaler will present a reading from his most recent work\, “Domestic Garden\,” as well as other poems at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Great Hall of Halliehurst. A book signing and reception will take place afterward.
