SUMMARY:Pepperoni Rolls: West Virginia's Gift to the World
DESCRIPTION:The Augusta Heritage Center is proudly presenting a series of foodways classes in Elkins\, WV. The classes will be taught by experienced chefs and home cooks from a variety of cultures representing Appalachia today. These community cooking sessions\, held once a month\, will cover specific dishes such as arepas\, adobo\, tomato sauce\, meatballs\, pizzelles\, pepperoni rolls\, dumplings\, fried chicken\, and collard greens\, as well as addressing topics such as cooking fresh in food deserts\, using local seasonal ingredients and canning and pickling techniques.\nStudents can expect to come away from each class with hands-on knowledge about how to make a dish and hopefully a deeper understanding of the importance of that dish to the people whose kitchens it sprang from. All ingredients and equipment will be provided. Class size limit is 15. SUMMARY:Fasnacht
DESCRIPTION:Helvetia’s Fasnacht\, sometimes described as the Mardi Gras of Appalachia\, is a Swiss celebration held near the end of winter. German for “fasting night\,” Fasnacht is meant to serve as the grand hurrah before Catholics who are practicing Lent give up fatty foods and other physical comforts until Easter. \nStarting in the afternoon\, you will be able to join in jam sessions\, listen to the sound of community coming together to eat and be merry\, or browse through the local shops and mask museum. \nIn the later part of the evening\, a parade featuring large\, often frightening\, artistic masks travels from the Red Hall to the Community Hall where the costumes are judged\, and a square dance begins. \nAt midnight the effigy of Old Man Winter is cut down from the ceiling of the Community Hall\, carried on the shoulders of the celebrants to the bonfire outside\, and burned to signal the end of Winter.

During the weekend\, you can also take a tour at Richter’s Maplehouse and learn how the syrup is made from start to finish. Food trucks and arts and craft vendors will be selling their goods for you to enjoy throughout the day. A wood-chopping exhibit\, a display showcasing beautiful homemade quilts\, and a photography show by the Buckhannon-Upshur Camera Club will all be part of the schedule of events. Different live performances and entertainment will also be held at the historic Opera House. We suggest stopping by the Craft Store and buying a maple flavored pasalubong. All proceeds will benefit the town and used for community projects as well as the upkeep of historic buildings. These activities will have you spending your whole day in Pickens.

DESCRIPTION:The Thirteenth Annual Ramps and Rail Festival will be held on April 29th\, 2023. The festival continues to grow each year and the Depot hopes everyone will come again this year! You can try different ramp-themed foods and listen to live music\, enjoy the craft vendors\, and vote for your favorite vendors. \nEach year the festivities start at 10am and continue until 4pm.
