SUMMARY:Cooking in Community: Savory & Sweet Hand Pies
DESCRIPTION:Augusta is presenting a new series of foodways classes in Elkins\, WV! The classes will be taught by experienced chefs and home cooks from a variety of cultures represented in Appalachia today. Classes will cover specific dishes such as arepas\, adobo\, tomato sauce\, meatballs\, pizzelles\, pepperoni rolls\, dumplings\, fried chicken\, and collard greens\, as well as addressing topics such as cooking fresh in food deserts\, using local seasonal ingredients and canning and pickling techniques. Students can expect to come away from each class with hands-on knowledge about how to make a dish and hopefully a deeper understanding of the importance of that dish to the people whose kitchens it sprang from. \nWhat are foodways?\nFoodways are more than food itself — they are the beliefs and context surrounding food\, the person-to-person teaching of its preparation\, as well as the community in which the food is enjoyed. The passing down of food traditions from one generation to the next is an integral piece of a community’s identity and culture. We use food to deepen community ties\, celebrate important holidays\, mark milestones\, and enrich our lives. SUMMARY:Ramps and Rail Festival
DESCRIPTION:The Thirteenth Annual Ramps and Rail Festival will be held on April 29th\, 2023. The festival continues to grow each year and the Depot hopes everyone will come again this year! You can try different ramp-themed foods and listen to live music\, enjoy the craft vendors\, and vote for your favorite vendors. \nEach year the festivities start at 10am and continue until 4pm. Food vendors concoct delicious ramp-themed foods\, like ramp burgers\, ramperoni rolls\, ramp chili\, and ramp risotto with shrimp. There will be about fifty different food and craft booths at the festival. The Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad has train rides available to those who want to take one of the first rides of the year. \nThe Elkins Ramps & Rail Festival returns on April 29\, 2023!
