SUMMARY:History Alive: Pearl S. Buck | Halliehurst Mansion
DESCRIPTION:Pearl S. Buck\, Pulitzer Prize-winning author and social activist\, will be portrayed by veteran actress and historical reenactor Karen Vuranch of Fayetteville\, at 12:15 p.m. on Nov. 1 at Halliehurst Mansion on the campus of Davis & Elkins College in Elkins. This program is being presented by GFWC Elkins Woman’s Club and the History Alive Program from the West Virginia Humanities Council. This program will be free to the public. Any student interested in books and/or history is strongly encouraged to come. Prior to the presentation there will be a luncheon at Halliehurst at 11:30 a.m. with food prepared from Pearl Buck’s cookbook. Tickets for the lunch are available for purchase at the Elkins Sewing Center\, or call 304-516-3993.

SUMMARY:Early Architecture on the Old Frontier | Beverly IOOF
DESCRIPTION:Local folklorist and author Gerry Milnes will present “Early Architecture on the Old Frontier of West Virginia” for the November 21 program of Randolph County Historical Society. \nThe program\, taken from Milnes’ upcoming book\, details the earliest shelters used by pioneers on the “Old Frontier“ of West Virginia\, tracing the history of frontier shelter and log buildings including ethnic influences\, construction techniques\, folklore\, and anecdotes gleaned from old-timers. \nThis program will be featured during the Randolph County Historical Society Fall Annual Meeting\, Friday November 21 at the Beverly IOOF Community Room\, located upstairs in the building next to the Randolph County Museum\, on Main Street in Beverly. \nThe schedule for the event\, free to the public\, includes: \n4 to 6 pm – Jacob Stalnaker Cabin open house \n6 to 6:30 – Reception in the Beverly IOOF Community Room \n6:30 – Brief RCHS annual meeting\, followed by Log Cabin program
