DESCRIPTION:Level up your guitar skills with this weekend of flatpicking immersion! The weekend’s teachers\, Tyler Grant and Robin Kessinger\, are both National Flatpicking Champions. As individuals\, their professional careers have taken them to concert halls and contest stages around the country and the world\, as well as to classrooms where they have been lauded as teachers. As a duo\, they formed a friendship based on mutual musical admiration and recorded an incredible duo album call “Kanawha County Flatpicking” in 2018. The classes for this event are organized into two tracks: Beginning/Intermediate (Level I) and Intermediate/Advanced (Level II). DESCRIPTION:Learn more about the “foundation story” of Randolph County — the short-lived settlement by the Files and Tygart families in 1753. Join us for the spring program of the Randolph County Historical Society on Thursday\, May 15\, 6:30 pm at the Randolph County Museum meeting room in Beverly.\nSteve Bodkins will share a historical presentation on the Files family\, one of the first known European families to settle in the Tygarts Valley. Steve will primarily explore the known history of the attack on the Files family by Native Americans at Beverly in 1753. He will also present additional historical evidence that he has recently uncovered\, to show that much more occurred during this event than current history books slide show last about one hour. Steve is a graduate of Tygarts Valley High School at Mill Creek and West Virginia University in Morgantown\, WV. He has written books\, Bemis & Glady West Virginia: A History of Two Mountain Towns and Forgotten Towns\, Pocahontas and Randolph Counties\, WV.

DESCRIPTION:We will host a free introductory Oral History workshop with Jennie Williams. This will be held in-person at 11:00 a.m. on Friday\, May 23rd at the West Virginia Wood Technology Center (10 11th Street\, Elkins\, WV 26241). Email ben@afnha.org to RSVP (limited space).\nThis workshop will offer an overview of oral history interview techniques\, tips\, ethics\, and best practices. It will also include a demonstration of how to use basic audio recording equipment.\nJennie Williams is the West Virginia State Folklorist and directs West Virginia Folklife\, a statewide program based at the West Virginia Humanities Council in Charleston. She is experienced in oral history interviewing\, documentation\, writing\, grants administration\, and facilitation of folk and traditional arts public programs. Jennie holds an M.A. in folklore and ethnomusicology from Indiana University. She is currently a Ph.D. candidate at IU\, and her dissertation centers oral history methods.
