SUMMARY:Pickin in the Park
DESCRIPTION:Elkins City Park is a lively place on Wednesday evenings from May through September\, with country\, gospel\, bluegrass and old-time jam sessions open to all. The Augusta Heritage Center sponsors the free event with support from Elkins Parks and Recreation Commission (EPRC) giving musicians of all ages an opportunity to play music together in a family-friendly setting.   \nVisitors and beginners are welcome to attend the weekly sessions. Throughout the spring\, summer and early fall\, classic country and gospel jam sessions take place in the small pavilion along the path inside the park. Bluegrass musicians jam in the Sycamore Pavilion along Sycamore Street\, and old-time musicians gather around picnic tables throughout the tree-shaded park. In case of rain\, old-time jams take place under the large pavilion. The pavilions are wheelchair accessible.

In order to work during the Open Studio Pottery hours\, you must posses an intermediate to advanced skill level including\, but not limited too; the ability to operate wheels\, use of glaze\, ability to fire “our” kilns\, proper tool usage and more. \nThe cost includes a great deal for our studio\, such as the use of our equipment\, tools\, includes all firings and access to all the glazes we have in studio. We have over 20 + glazes to chose from. You have a semi private space to work\, and can store your items on a marked shelf. \nPrerequisite. No matter your skill level\, you should have taken at least one of our pottery classes prior to requesting. Private instructions are not included. \nYou are responsible for your own clay\, and reclaim clay. \nCleanup: Leave the studio in better shape then when you arrived. DESCRIPTION:The Railyard Restaurant\, Summit Church and Appalachian Rail Excursions are teaming up for the 2nd Annual Speeder Car Fund Raiser for Feed the City by Summit Church. Feed the city is a monthly out reach program designed to provide a free meal to anyone in our city who could use a meal and fellowship.\nThere is a minimum donation of 20 dollars per person – to include children riders.\nChildren 5 years and older must be accompanied by an adult.\nRegulations will not allow rides for children 4 and under. \nNew this year: VENDOR FAIR! Wander through Town Square\, shop\, and grab a snack. There will be face painting and characters for the kids. Still accepting vendors at this time. \nIt takes a team to build a community and greatly appreciate all the support that is provided by our wonderful Elkins community. This weekend\, formally known as Dare to be Square Helvetia\, is designed for aspiring and advanced callers\, dancers\, musicians\, singers and those eager to try something new. Foodways\, craft\, and mountain culture sessions are also in the works. Workshops will be held Saturday and Sunday. Come up for just a day\, or the whole weekend! Come experience a local West Virginia square dance Friday night at the Jackson Mill Jubilee in Weston. Camping will be available Friday – Monday morning. \nWorkshops will be offered by Ginny Hawker\, Val Mindel\, Jesse Milnes\, Mack Samples\, Bill Ohse\, Lou Maiuri\, Becky Hill\, T- Claw\, Ellen & Eugene Ratcliffe and many others yet to be determined! Workshop highlights include Helvetia Fiddle Tunes with Jesse Milnes\, a Gospel Sing with Ginny Hawker\, Calling 101 & 102 with T-Claw\, Glenville Style Square Dances with legendary WV Callers\, Flatfooting 1 & 2 with Becky Hill & friends\, Old-Time Singing with Val Mindel and so much more! \nThere are two beautiful dance halls and there will be many opportunities to practice calling! Evening dances are open to the public on Saturday & Sunday nights with jam sessions at all hours. \nEVENT CHECK-IN: will start at 10am on Saturday\, August 31 in the Community Hall\nPlease bring CASH or CHECK when registering at the gate. \nVOLUNTEER: Please let us know if you can’t come due to not being able to afford the admission price.
