DESCRIPTION:The Almost Heaven Star Party\, organized by the Northern Virginia Astronomy Club\, begins on Friday\, September 3\, 2021 and ends the morning of Tuesday\, September 7th. The star party takes advantage of the location of the Spruce Knob Mountain Center which features some of the darkest skies on the east coast. Almost 300 star gazers and amateur astronomers gather on our campus to spend four nights exploring the night sky.\nOver the course of the weekend there will be exploration and adventure events during the day — hiking\, caving\, canoeing and excursion train adventures. SUMMARY:Rosie the Riveter Celebration @ Elkins Town Square Amphitheater
DESCRIPTION:Our Town is planning a Rosie the Riveter celebration on Labor Day\, Monday\, September 6 to celebrate those women who were the backbone of our homefront military effort during WW II.  The event is scheduled to occur at the Rotary Amphitheater beginning at 12 noon.  Those of all ages who are attending are welcome to bring a chair\, a blanket\, a sun umbrella and a lunch as we celebrate this day. .  There will be presentations\, music\, dance and participant involvement. Everyone will be asked to bring a bell of any size to join in the world wide bell ringing ceremony at  1 pm.  Those coming dressed as the stereotypical Rosie will be eligible for door prizes.  This event is a national and international celebration and Elkins wants to be part of the recognition for these special women\, many from our area and a few who still live among us. SUMMARY:Cass Bald Knob Trip @ Cass Scenic Railroad State Park
DESCRIPTION:Boarding Location – Cass Depot (not Elkins) \n\n12363 Cass Road\nCass\, WV 24927 \n\nTrip Summary \nThe long haul of 11 miles to Bald Knob takes about four and a half hours for the 22-mile round trip. Panoramas of the lofty Appalachians become more beautiful as the train climbs higher and higher. Passengers suddenly realize they are entering a completely different world\, mainly because of the change in trees\, flowers and atmosphere. By climbing the 2\,390 feet from Cass (2452-feet) to Bald Knob (4842-feet) on Back Allegheny Mountain and second highest point in West Virginia\, passengers have made the equivalent to an 800 mile trip to Canada in climate because of the higher altitude. Here are found spruce trees\, snowshoe hares and other plants and animals typical in the far north. The rustic overlook affords one of the most awesome\, overwhelming spectacles in the cast. Dwarfed by distance and almost lost in the vastness of the panorama is the giant Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope\, the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope\, at the Green Bank Observatory in the valley near the foot of the mountain. A remarkable contrast between the wilderness at Bald Knob and today’s space-age facilities! \nA “King of the Road” hobo lunch will be provided to enjoy with your ride as well. The hobo lunch consists of a cold sandwich (lunch meat\, cheese\, etc. all separated in plastic wrap)\, chips\, cookie\, and bottled water. A ride on the Cass Scenic Railroad is an unforgettable experience for the whole family.

DESCRIPTION:We hope you will join us for a Gravel Extravaganza exploring the hollows on and around Spruce Knob. We will take you on guided and supported tours of the highest peaks in the Alleghenies. You’ll find friendship\, personal challenge\, and amazing views of the remote farming and wilderness filled valleys of these ancient mountains.\nOur mission is to provide high-quality outdoor programming as a tool to develop competence\, confidence\, and community for all people of all ages. This event is built as high-quality outdoor programming in its own right\, but also as a pillar of support to allow us to provide better scholarships and more opportunities to kids\, adults\, and schools in the underserved communities around us.\nGravel Hollow is a means to an end\, but it is also an end in itself. We will explore the backroads and hidden hollows of the very communities you are supporting by taking part in this event. Your entry fee and/or fundraising will directly support both Experience Learning programming and a whole host of local businesses and communities.\nWe hope you will join us for a weekend of breathtaking views and climbs\, low-traffic\, high-reward community building adventures with gravel bikers. We have three supported rides planned\, a smorgasbord of amazing local beverages and foods to enjoy\, and plenty of much-needed socializing around our yurts.

DESCRIPTION:Boarding Location – Cass Depot (not Elkins) \n\n12363 Cass Road\nCass\, WV 24927 \n\nTrip Summary \nThe long haul of 11 miles to Bald Knob takes about four and a half hours for the 22-mile round trip. Panoramas of the lofty Appalachians become more beautiful as the train climbs higher and higher. Passengers suddenly realize they are entering a completely different world\, mainly because of the change in trees\, flowers and atmosphere. By climbing the 2\,390 feet from Cass (2452-feet) to Bald Knob (4842-feet) on Back Allegheny Mountain and second highest point in West Virginia\, passengers have made the equivalent to an 800 mile trip to Canada in climate because of the higher altitude. Here are found spruce trees\, snowshoe hares and other plants and animals typical in the far north. The rustic overlook affords one of the most awesome\, overwhelming spectacles in the cast. Dwarfed by distance and almost lost in the vastness of the panorama is the giant Robert C. Byrd Green Bank Telescope\, the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope\, at the Green Bank Observatory in the valley near the foot of the mountain. A remarkable contrast between the wilderness at Bald Knob and today’s space-age facilities! \nA “King of the Road” hobo lunch will be provided to enjoy with your ride as well. The hobo lunch consists of a cold sandwich (lunch meat\, cheese\, etc. all separated in plastic wrap)\, chips\, cookie\, and bottled water. The festival has continued to promote the beauty and splendor of our mountains and valleys in all their autumn glory and promoting prudent development\, conservation and culture of our abundant natural resources for the future. \nThe events have increased so much over the years that now instead of having a three or four day festival; it lasts for over a week. Some events that are held are Opening\, Closing Ceremony\, Grand feature parade\, Children’s Parade\, ATV Race\, Carnival\, Coronation of Queen Silvia\, Distinguished Guest Dinner\, Queen’s Ball\, ATV Race\, Lumberjack Competition and many more. All together there are over 100 events included in the Mountain State Forest Festival.

SUMMARY:West Virginia Trilogy/Run For the Hills Half Marathon & 5K
DESCRIPTION:The WV Trilogy is a triptych of runs along the eastern continental divide. On Columbus Day weekend\, runners take over the Spruce Knob Mountain Center and\, over the course of three days\, complete first a 50K\, then a 50 mile and finally a half marathon race on the trails in and around the Experience Learning campus. Participants may choose to take part in one\, two\, or all three races. There is also a 5K race on the final day.\nThe half marathon and 5K races directly support the Experience Learning organization and programs.\nWest Virginia’s Monongahela National Forest (MNF) is a treasure where the mountains wrap themselves around you. The highlands of the MNF are a place of solitude\, choice\, and challenge – a place where nature prevails and where we must adapt. The landscape embodies wildness and reminds you of yesterday’s people. The West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners and Experience Learning welcome you to the Trilogy. Come for these special autumn runs on Spruce Mountain and take home memories you will enjoy for a lifetime.
