SUMMARY:Almost Heaven Star Party with the Northern Va. Astronomy Club
DESCRIPTION:The Almost Heaven Star Party\, organized by the Northern Virginia Astronomy Club\, begins on Friday\, August 14\, 2020 and ends the morning of Tuesday\, August 18th. The star party takes advantage of the location of the Spruce Knob Mountain Center which features some of the darkest skies on the east coast. Almost 300 star gazers and amateur astronomers gather on our campus to spend four nights exploring the night sky. Over the course of the weekend there will be exploration and adventure events during the day — hiking\, caving\, canoeing and excursion train adventures. There will also be speakers and presentations about astronomy and a gear swap. DESCRIPTION:SOLO’s Wilderness First Responder (WFR) course is the recognized industry standard for those who work as backcountry trip leaders\, camp counselors\, mountain guides\, river guides\, and ski patrollers. What is taught?The WFR is 72-80 hours long (10 days)\, and is a comprehensive and in-depth look at the standards and skills of dealing with: Response and Assessment\, Musculoskeletal Injuries\, Environmental Emergencies and Survival Skills\, Soft Tissue Injuries\, and Medical Emergencies. Although these appear to be the same basic topics covered in our two-day WFA course\, they are covered far more extensively\, and there is much more hands-on practice. Additional topics\, such as CPR\, are also included. Who is the WFR course for?The WFR is the perfect course for anyone working in a position of leadership in an outdoor setting or for individuals who want a high level of wilderness medical training for extended personal backcountry trips or expeditions. Course Options and CostsWFR: course only: $875 Includes course\, tent space\, access to bath house (price goes up to $900 July 1st) Meals:  $36 additional per night (3 meals per night\, 8 or 9 nights depending on arrival) Lodging: Beds in the dorm: $15 additional per night (8 or more nights depending on arrival and departure) Private yurt: $60 additional per night.
