History Awaits – Mansions and Museums (3-5 hours)
Begin your adventure by traveling to the town of Beverly, six miles south of Elkins. In Beverly you will find the Beverly Heritage Center (304-637-7424), where you can experience the professional quality exhibits and compelling stories that will delight visitors of all ages. Guests will explore our Civil War heritage, the local economy, and leave with a new appreciation for historic places. While at the Center, get a free historic walking guide to Beverly’s historic buildings. Step inside the seasonally open Randolph County Museum on Main Street. Built in 1827-28 this was one of the first commercial brick buildings constructed west of the Allegheny Mountains. A confederate cemetery is also just a short distance from the Center. Enjoy lunch in Beverly or drive to Elkins to dine before visiting other sights.
On the historic campus of Davis & Elkins College take time to visit Graceland Inn, circa. 1892 (304-637-1600) which was Senator Henry Gassaway Davis’s summer home. Halliehurst Mansion, circa. 1890 was the summer home of Senator Stephen B. Elkins. While in Halliehurst do not miss the free Stirrup Gallery Museum (304-637-1980) to explore history up close. From May through October check out the West Virginia Railroad Museum (304-637-4810) and the Appalachian Forest Discovery Center (304-637-6182), both located at the corner of Railroad Avenue and 1st Street in Elkins.
