Scenic Drive, Great Views, Fish Hatchery – 3 Hours
For a nice three-hour venture take Route 33 East for about four miles out of Elkins and turn left onto Old US Route 33. Follow the road signs for Stuart Recreation Area and Bickle Knob (about 2 miles). Turn left on WV Route 6 at the Stuart Recreation Area directional sign and drive 1/2 mile.
Here you can turn left and drive into Stuart Recreation Area. This park has hiking trails, picnic tables, pavilions, campsites, and a river to fish or swim in. Stuart Recreation Area is open from mid April to the beginning of October with a driving free of $5 per vehicle, but during the off season you can park at the entrance gate and walk in for free.
Once you explore Stuart Recreation Area, as you exit, take a slight left and then an immediate right onto Stuart Memorial Drive and follow the gravel road to the Bickle Knob Observation Tower. If you like heights then walk up to the top of the tower and catch the panoramic vista of the surrounding forest. Don’t worry though, if you aren’t a heights person, there is still a breathtaking overlook of the mountains at the bottom of the tower.
When leaving Bickle Knob continue on Stuart Memorial Drive taking the left at the fork in the road until you reach Route 33. Turn right onto Route 33 and turn right onto Old Route 33 at the bottom of the mountain. The Bowden Fish Hatchery will be on your left. You can find out what time they are feeding the fish for the day to get the full hatchery experience (304-637-0238). Leaving the Bowden Fish Hatchery, turn left, follow the two-lane road and make a right on the four–lane highway to return to Elkins.
