SUMMARY:Movies at the Museum
DESCRIPTION:Catch intriguing documentaries every Monday evening in August\, showtime starting at 7 PM! \nFREE Admission \n8/7 – In Tune: A Community of Musicians\nFrom West Virginia Public Broadcasting\, In Tune examines old-time music in the hills and valleys of WV. The documentary also considers the homogenization of customs and music culture; the impact of the American Folk Revival; rediscovery of old-time musicians; the arrival of back-to-the-landers in Appalachia; growing popularity of old-time music festivals. \n8/14 – RUMBLE: The Indians Who Rocked the World\nRUMBLE explores how the Native American influence is an integral part of music history\, despite attempts to ban\, censor\, and erase Indigenous culture in the United States. The stories of iconic Native musicians are told by some of America’s greatest music legends who knew them\, played music with them\, and were inspired by them: everyone from Buddy Guy\, Quincy Jones\, and Tony Bennett to Iggy Pop\, Steven Tyler\, and Stevie Van Zandt. RUMBLE shows how Indigenous music was part of the very fabric of American popular music from the beginning\, but that the Native American contribution was left out of the story – until now. \n8/21 – The Resilient Forest\nThe Resilient Forest documents the settlements\, early history\, industrialization\, folklife\, recreation\, conservation\, and forestry practices that have formed the cultural identity of residents of the Appalachian Forest National Heritage Area. \n8/28 – Reel ‘Em\, Boys\, Reel ‘Em\nA film by Augusta Heritage Center\, Reel ‘Em features West Virginia traditional square dancing and step dancing. This documentary follows the Mountain Dance Trail as it winds across the Mountain State.

SUMMARY:Signs\, Cures\, and Witchery Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a free showing of the documentary Signs\, Cures\, and Witchery\, introduced by folklorist Gerry Milnes. Doors will open at 5:30 and the film will begin at 6:00. Before and after the film\, guest are encouraged to look at our exhibit Creating Cultures: Ethnic Groups in the AFNHA to learn more about our heritage in the region. Light refreshments will be provided. \n“This hour-long documentary traces Germanic belief systems from Europe to West Virginia\, from the fifteenth century to present practitioners. Signs\, Cures and Witchery opens a window into our ancient past\, revealing the courage\, resourcefulness and humor of people whose survival depended on their ability to “read signs\,” cure their own ills\, and find explanations for life’s mysteries. Local community practices in West Virginia such as witch doctoring\, “belsnickling\,” “shanghai\,” and folk healing are connected to their medieval counterparts in woodcuts and other works of art. In tracing immigration to remote mountain communities\, we learn how expressions of folk art and occult belief survive. This work specifically examines aspects of Appalachian oral tradition and folklore that draw from German culture.”
