DESCRIPTION:Helvetia welcomes you to celebrate our 59th Annual Fasnacht.\nAn indoor and outdoor event\, we invite you to join us from 12p to 10p for a celebration of winter\, the changing seasons\, and a pre-Lenten tradition that dates back to 1520 in Switzerland. Sometimes called the Mardi Gras of Appalachia\, Fasnacht is German for “fasting night\,” which celebrates a grand feast before a fast. Helvetia’s Fasnacht combines the customs of the Swiss Fasnacht and Sechseläuten\, a traditional spring holiday celebrated in the Swiss city of Zürich where they burn an effigy of winter to welcome spring.\nWe will enjoy fatty foods\, listen to Swiss & Appalachian tunes\, wear homemade masks to scare away Old Man Winter\, parade with lampions\, and burn an effigy of the Old Man in hopes of a healthy and happy spring.\nPlease join us for a celebration that is dear to our community. We only ask that you participate with care and tenderness toward our small village. This event is coordinated entirely by a small group of volunteers so please temper expectations and offer a helping hand to any in need.\nAll proceeds benefit the community’s restoration\, development\, and archives.\nGENERAL ADMISSION (ADULT) – $35Ticket includes entry to the masquerade where twenty-five masks are awarded a handmade Swiss flag\, the jam session inside the Star Band Hall\, free sign up for guided tours (limited numbers)\, and admission to the Alpine-Appalachian square dance inside the Helvetia Community Hall.\nGENERAL ADMISSION (YOUTH 12-17) – $15Youth attendance includes the same offerings as General Admission.\nCHILDREN 11 & UNDER – FREE ADMISSIONChildren are encouraged to attend for free. DESCRIPTION:Join us with West Virginia Mountain Trail Runners (WVMTR) in celebration of the 2025 Winter Solstice with an all-night run in Helvetia. The run and clock will start at sunset on Saturday\, 20 December\, 5:02pm\, and stop at sunrise on Sunday\, 21 December\, 7:35am. DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 26th running of the Helvetia 10k Mountain Run! \nExperience the authenticity of a Swiss mountain community at the Helvetia 10k Mountain Run. This race is located in Helvetia\, West Virginia in southern Randolph County and coincides with the Helvetia Fair. \nThis race follows portions of an original Swiss settlement trail and passes right through the center of Helvetia. Beginning in 1998\, this event was Jody and Dan Lehmann’s first attempt at race directing and served as the inspiration for what has become WVMTR. Each year\, this race’s t-shirt features a coat of arms from a different canton — or territory — of Switzerland. Be on the lookout for the heraldic animal of the bear\, featured on the Canton of Bern’s flag\, standing perennial guard over Clay Hill! \nMake it a running weekend. Participate in the Black-Hel Double! Race the Blackwater Canyon Half Marathon on Saturday Sept. 13 from Thomas to Parsons\, WV and Helvetia 10k Sunday the 14th in Helvetia and get a cool award!

One of the oldest agricultural fairs (since 1917) in West Virginia\, the Helvetia Community Fair encourages local families\, friends\, and visitors to celebrate our harvest and our heritage. \nFestivities include a parade\, Swiss folk dancing\, Fahnenschwingen (Swiss flag swinging)\, Alphorn playing\, yodeling\, field games\, relays\, concessions\, arts and crafts\, and a square dance.\nHelvetia’s original settlers proved they could withstand harsh winters and rugged terrain while retaining the traditions of their mother country\, Switzerland. \nThe Helvetia Community Fair reflects our Swiss character\, celebrates our ancestry\, and encourages our children and visitors to embrace our traditions.

DESCRIPTION:Honoring our Swiss roots\, Helvetia will celebrate Switzerland’s National Holiday on Saturday\, July 31. We’re celebrating a little differently than years past\, but it will be a grand time. \nIn the early evening (6:30pm)\, we welcome you to take a tour of our small museum and ask about our history with local historians/archivists\, Anna Chandler and Eleanor Betler. Our original Swiss flag hangs in the museum (take a peek). The flag was brought to Helvetia by the Swiss settlers in the 1870s and requires some preservation. HRDO hosts this free event\, in part\, to bring awareness to Helvetia’s preservation efforts. \nAt sunset (around 8:30pm)\, we’ll watch the movie “Heidi” outside (weather permitting). Cohosted by the Helvetia Public Library\, we welcome you to bring your blankets\, chairs\, snacks and drinks (no food will be served at the event). \nThis event is FREE\, but donations toward our original Swiss flag’s preservation are welcome. Please come snuggle into Helvetia’s hills for a celebration of our Swiss ancestry.
