SUMMARY:Helvetia Days
DESCRIPTION:Founded in 1869 by a group of hearty\, self-reliant Swiss immigrants\, Helvetia still stands small but proud. She’s changed a little over the years\, but the community holds onto many traditions unique to West Virginia and to the United States. \nTo celebrate our birthday\, locals will share some of their skills with ‘Living History’ demonstrations (including hand-loom weaving\, shingling\, dry stack masonry\, beekeeping\, tanning\, trapping\, log sill repair\, and more). These demonstrations are free but donations to the community are welcome. \nFestivities kick off on Saturday\, October 19 with an ox roast (sales of sandwiches will take place from 12:00pm-4:30pm or until supplies last). The Living History demonstrations will occur every thirty minutes during that time and our museum/archives will be open for tours and questions. At 7pm-10pm there will be a square dance at the Community Hall ($5/adult). \nOn Sunday\, October 20 at 2pm\, we’ll hike (or you’re welcome to run wink wink) the original settler’s “Historic Trail.” The 2.5 mile hike is rigorous and often muddy so bring your hiking boots and a rain coat in case of bad weather. Coffee\, cocoa and light refreshments to follow at the Helvetia Star Band Hall. (Also free\, but donations that will support the community are welcome). \nThis event is hosted by the volunteers from Helvetia’s very special organizations that bring you events like the Fair\, Fasnacht\, the Feast of Sankt Nicholaus\, and the Ramp Supper. We are small but mighty so please give our dear volunteers hug and a thank you for carrying on.

SUMMARY:Welcome Cookout & Case Study Interviews @ Helvetia Public Library
DESCRIPTION:The Helvetia Public Library has been chosen as one of eight libraries across the country to participate in a federally funded case study debating the question of libraries being a component of social wellbeing in rural and\nresource poor geographies. There will be two researchers arriving here from NY on Saturday June 29th. We would like to welcome them to\nHelvetia and to our library by having a small potluck cookout at the Red Hall (5:00) for them to talk to people informally and greet them. This will be very informal and just asking for each of you to bring a dish and enjoy a hopefully nice evening welcoming these two. On Sunday\, the 30th\, they are asking we set up meetings throughout the day so they can talk to the residents of Helvetia individually. These small interviews should last around half an hour to forty five minutes. (please email jerianne.davis@clark.lib.wv.us or call 304-924-5063) to reserve your time They especially want to talk to people that are active in the community\, business leaders\, anyone that is a part of any of the organizations or clubs here and even residents who do not utilize the library at this time! We need your help!\nSee you there!
