SUMMARY:Zen Sesshin with Bruce Harris @ Saranam Retreat Center
DESCRIPTION:Open to anyone who’s interested in meditation and the path toward our deepest yearning\, what Zen calls our “true nature.” 2019 is the twentieth year Bruce has been coming to our sangha—we are celebrating the good fortune that brought us together.\nBruce gets us started\, encourages us\, offers thought-provoking talks\, and then leaves us in the zendo while he meets one on one in the dokusan (interview) room. He finds where we’re at\, and helps over the bumps and apparent barriers. Some of us have gone on to koan study with him.\nWe’ll arrive in the afternoon in time for a light supper at 6 on Monday November 11th\, begin that evening\, and conclude with a final meal at mid-day on Friday the 15th.\nTypical schedule: meet at 6:30 a.m.\, sit/walk two periods\, breakfast\, meet again in the zendo or in the dharma den for a talk. Tea break\, more sitting\, begin personal interviews. Lunch is followed by a siesta and work period. Meet again at 3\, more sitting and usually another talk\, up until supper around 6. After clean-up\, one or two more periods\, and finish the day. Some enjoy more sitting into the night. If sitting on a cushion on the floor for 20 – 25 minutes at a time is too hard on the joints\, we can use a chair.\nDevotional aspects of our practice include chanting sutras (we have translations); bowing\, and twice a day\, three “full bows\,” or prostrations\, tossing away any ego stiffness; silence unless there is a real need to speak (say\, in the kitchen). Living with other people in general silence has a quality of dance to it.\nSpeaking of the kitchen\, we all contribute to meals and take turns cooking. Sleeping arrangements are dorm-style.\nBruce Harris trained as a young man at Zen monasteries in Japan; left to care for his mother in France\, where he found contemplative Christian groups\, including Greek Orthodox; and more recently\, he has studied with a Tibetan rinpoche. His teaching is firmly grounded in Buddhism\, going back to the earliest days\, on to Zen’s flourishing in the Tang Dynasty\, and to the lay-oriented group he’s affiliated with\, Sanbo Zen. He is open-minded and interested in all traditions. We’re on the path together.\nContact: Hugh Rogers\, hugh.rogers@gmail.com\, 304-636-2662. Cost: $280.00 ($65.00 /day for teacher\, $15.00/day for Saranam use.) Some scholarship assistance may be available.

SUMMARY:Home and Away: A Writing Weekend @ Saranam
DESCRIPTION:In this weekend workshop\, we will focus on the theme of home from a variety of perspectives\, each writer seeking her or his own path. You may write about coming home\, leaving home\, the joys and toils of making a home\, the sorrow of abandoning a home. Your homeplace may be literal—for instance\, a farm where generations have passed down their tools and stories—or metaphorical\, a contemplation of finding a sense of belonging in another community or another realm.\nIn each of several writing sessions\, participants will hear examples meant to inspire and encourage\, spend time writing in the peaceful surroundings of Saranam\, and share their drafts (if they wish) with others in the small group. Your workshop leader will provide gentle coaching in a safe atmosphere. This workshop is appropriate for beginners as well as accomplished writers.\nThe workshop begins at 7:00 p.m. on Friday evening\, November 1 and ends after lunch on Sunday\, November 3. COST: $200.00 includes workshop tuition\, lodging\, and five meals. Limited space available. SUMMARY:Free the Voice! A Weekend Workshop + Voice Bath @ Saranam Retreat Center\, Montrose
DESCRIPTION:Hooray\, she’s coming back!\nLast spring\, we invited Odeya Nini to lead a workshop and Voice Bath; we are so happy to announce that she will be back this month to offer this again\, and more. \nFree The Resonant Voice\n6pm Friday 10/18 – 3pm Sunday 10/20\nSaranam Retreat Center\, Montrose \nThis workshop is dedicated to sensing the voice\, strengthening our relationship with it\, and realizing the healing effects we have when we use our voice with intention and love. We will explore sound as touch\, practice exercises to clear mental and physical expression\, develop the imagination\, and invite awareness. \nThe workshop begins with a Voice Bath on Friday at 6 PM – a total sound bath immersion in the healing power of the human voice\, accompanied by the celestial drones of Himalayan and crystal singing bowls. Open your body\, heart\, and mind as you lay down and journey in meditation to the healing sound waves of changing vibration\, dynamic tone\, melody\, emotion\, and the powerful resonance of the voice. (Admission to the Voice Bath only\, without the weekend portion\, also includes the performance of A Solo Voice on Thursday in Thomas: $20 covers both events.) \n$200 includes Voice Bath\, instruction\, meals\, and accommodation at Saranam\, PLUS the performance of A Solo Voice at Gradient Project Space on Thursday 10/17 (see details below)\nStudent discounts available \nThe weekend workshop is preceded by: \nA Solo Voice\nperformed by Odeya Nini\nThursday 10/17 (doors at 7pm\, performance at 7:30pm)\nGradient Project Space\, Thomas\n$20 (includes Voice Bath at Saranam on Friday)\nFREE with workshop registration \nEvolving over the last nine years\, A Solo Voice\, composed and performed by Odeya Nini\, is an investigation of resonance\, extended vocal techniques\, performance\, and pure expression\, exploring the relationship between mind and body and the various landscapes it can yield. The work is a series of malleable compositions and improvisations that include field recordings and theatrical elements\, aiming to dissociate the voice from its traditional attributes and create a new logic of song that is not only heard but seen through movement and action. In a multi-dimensionality that serves to both provoke and soothe in abstract communication\, the voice is presented in its spectrum of natures as it travels through cultures\, ages\, emotions and colors\, like photographs\, with tender intimacy and bold aberrance. \nOdeya Nini is a Los Angeles based contemporary vocalist\, composer\, yoga instructor\, and vocal coach. Her music spans orchestral pieces to solo vocal composition\, sound installations\, and sound healing Voice Baths. With backgrounds including theater\, somatic practices\, and world music\, her teaching leads people on a journey to embody the voice through pure expression of sound and emotion\, mind/body awareness\, and freeing the voice in a therapeutic\, interdisciplinary manner. Her workshops\, Voice Baths\, and solo artistic work have been presented at universities\, wellness centers\, and concert halls from Los Angeles to Tel Aviv\, Mongolia\, Madagascar\, and Vietnam.\nIn June 2016\, Odeya gave birth to her first child\, a sweet little boy named Taiga Kol. The journey of motherhood has added an even deeper connection to the offering and nurturing of her voice.\nwww.voicebath.com\nwww.odeyanini.com
