Laurel Fork Wilderness

Forest Road 423, Harman, WV 26270

This primitive campground offers visitors a nice camping opportunity in the Middle Mountain area on the site of an old Civilian Conservation Corps location. There are 16 single unit campsites available on a first come, first serve basis and there is an $11 camping fee per night. Sites are located in an open area with little vegetative screening. Each campsite has a parking spur, table, fire ring, and lantern holder. Campsites are suitable for tent or trailer camping. Three vault toilets are available, but remember to purify all water or bring your own.

Day hiking and backpacking opportunities are accessible from the 18.5 miles of trail between the campground and the two wilderness areas, the Laurel Fork North and South Wilderness. During the winter, you can access the many ungroomed nature trails for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.   Many of the trails follow old railroad grades and logging roads, and there are several possible loop hikes made by combining trails.

Backcountry camping is permitted and the Forest Service also offers the rustic Middle Mountain Cabins for rent located at the south end of Middle Mountain. Cast a line in the nearby Laurel Fork of the Cheat that is regularly stocked by the WV DNR with brook and brown trout. Open 24 hours a day, and 7 days a week during the open season.
