Cheat Bridge, West Virginia

Cheat Bridge is an unincorporated community in southeastern Randolph County, West Virginia. It is located near U.S. Route 250 near upper Shavers Fork of the Cheat River. As the name suggests, Cheat Bridge is named for a historical bridge over the Shavers Fork River. It was built in the 19th century to service the Staunton-Parkersburg Turnpike. The original covered bridge was built before the American Civil War. After the Battle of Greenbrier River, Union troops used the bridge when they built extensive military defenses at the nearby Cheat Summit Fort. The current bridge is a steel truss bridge built in 1912 by the Canton Bridge Company. Today, U.S. Route 250 crosses the Shavers Fork River on a 1934 truss bridge and provides access to the adjacent Monongahela National Forest.

Cheat Bridge also serves as a stop for the Cheat Mountain Salamander train operated by the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad. The majestic forest of Gaudineer Knob is located just a mile past Cheat Bridge. Mower Tract of Cheat Mountain is also located nearby. The Stonecoal Dispersed Camping Area and Cheat Mountain Club are places to stay in Cheat Bridge.
