Stonecoal Dispersed Camping Area
Forest Road 209, Huttonsville, WV 26273
The Stonecoal dispersed camping area, located along the upper Shavers Fork of the Cheat River, has long been a popular area for anglers and other campers. This upper section of the river is one of the highest elevated rivers in the eastern United States. The Stonecoal area is between the town of Durbin and Huttonsville on Route 250. The campground received its name from the stream leading into the sites, called Stonecoal Run.
Stonecoal is popular with fishermen, especially when trout have recently been stocked, which happens quite a lot during the spring through fall. Shavers Fork has lots of shallow water areas, but also deep, large pools, and it flows for much of its length through the Monongahela National Forest. The campground features 19 sites for RV’s and tents with a perfect view of the river. In the dispersed camping area are two vault toilets, and further towards the end of the road along the river is a natural spring for drinking water. On some days, you will be able to see and hear the Cheat Mountain Salamander train chugging along on the adjacent railroad tracks.
