High Falls of Cheat Trail

Forest Road 44, Glady, WV 26268

The High Falls of Cheat is one of the most beautiful waterfalls in the Monongahela, and at an altitude of over 2,800ft, one of the highest. The High Falls of Cheat is horseshoe-shaped, and over 100ft wide, falling 20ft into a large pool below. The High Falls trail passes through old growth forest, and large hemlock as it winds through the saddle on Shavers Mountain. This is a beautiful yet challenging hike in the backcountry of the Monongahela National Forest.

There are many access points for the High Falls trail. One of these points is hiking along the West Fork Rail Trail in Glady, West Virginia. Another trailhead is located just 4 miles south of Glady, on Forest Road 44. At almost any trailhead, the 7-mile hike is not for the faint of heart due to the steady grade. The High Falls is a stopping point for The New Tygart Flyer excursion train so be careful hiking along the railroad tracks.

This is a great trail to backpack and camp out overnight by the rushing falls. There are a couple of good camping sites before you cross the ridge and a few more at the bottom by the river.
