Day 1

Elkins

Bike the Allegheny Highlands Trail

Breakfast

Grab a quick latte from TipTop and head to Scotties Diner, a local favorite, for a big breakfast. Once you’ve had your fill, you should be ready to start your morning.

Morning

  1. Stop by the Elkins Depot Welcome Center for maps, information and to scout out the Allegheny Highlands Trail (AHT) Trailhead — it’s located adjacent to the Depot.
  2. If you need biking gear be sure to stop by Joey’s Bike Shop.
  3. Grab a fresh to-go lunch from The Crossing Coffee Bar for your biking adventure.
  4. Hit the AHT for a long ride along the rail trail. The trail follows the original route of the West Virginia Central and Pittsburg Railway built by Henry Gassaway Davis in 1884. This exceptionally scenic trail provides panoramic views of the West Virginia countryside as it passes through small towns and rural farmland from the Elkins Depot Welcome Center continuing into Tucker County, the small town of Parsons and beyond into Hendricks.

Lunch

After all the morning riding, you’re going to love the packed lunch on the AHT — and since there are no food options on the trail, you’ll be glad you did.

Afternoon

  1. Ride your bikes back to Elkins and enjoy some leisure time walking and shopping in downtown Elkins.
  2. Curb your sweet tooth at Guilty Pleasures Sweet Shop or grab something to-go.

Dinner

Head to El Gran Sabor for authentic Venezuelan food, sip on a margarita, and listen to live music every Wednesday and Friday evening.

Day 2

Huttonsville, Beverly

Hike or Bike at Kumbrabow State Forest & Experience History in Beverly

Kumbrabow State Forest

Breakfast

Enjoy sausage biscuits and gravy, a breakfast sandwich, fruit and yogurt, or delicious pastries from Great Harvest Baking before heading up the valley to Kumbrabow State Forest. Make sure to purchase your lunch and snacks for a picnic among the trees during your hiking adventure at Kumbrabow.

Morning

  1. Head South on 219 and travel to Kumbrabow State Forest, where you’ll find hiking trails, and Mill Creek Falls, one of the waterfalls on the West Virginia Waterfall Trail. Make sure to check in at the waterfall and snap some photos of this picturesque attraction.
  2. Hike or bike some of the trails and explore the Forest around you.

Did You Know?

Perched along the Allegheny Mountains in Randolph County, Kumbrabow State Forest is West Virginia’s highest forest and the only state forest located in the county.

Lunch

Find a cozy spot to enjoy your picnic lunch from Great Harvest.

Afternoon

  1. Travel back to Beverly, a hidden treasure of history in West Virginia. Take a walk through the historic downtown with a self-guided tour brochure – you can pick one up at the Beverly Heritage Center where you can learn more about local history and culture of Randolph County.
  2. If you’re up for a fun challenge, experience the Escape Room at the 1841 Randolph County Jail Escape Room.
  3. Meander through the town and make sure to check out the many antique shops.

Dinner

Choose from one of our unique restaurants, The Southern Kitchen for down-home cooking, or Mi Fiesta for Mexican cuisine in Beverly.

Day 3

High Falls Trails

Hike to a Remote Waterfall–the High Falls of Cheat

Smoke on the Water BBQ

Breakfast

Since you’ll be burning those calories today, indulge a bit this morning. Grab some donuts from Byrd’s House of Donuts. Yeast or cake, filled or maple topped, you’ll be thinking about these donuts long after your vacation ends.

Morning

  1. Pack your lunch to enjoy at the High Falls before the trek back to your car. May we suggest more donuts?
  2. Drive to FS Road 44 High Falls Trail Trailhead
  3. The High Falls trail passes through old growth forest, and large hemlock as it winds through the saddle on Shavers Mountain. This is a beautiful yet challenging hike in the backcountry of the Monongahela National Forest. This 7-mile hike is not for the faint of heart due to the steady grade.
  4. Keep in Mind – The High Falls is a stopping point for The New Tygart Flyer excursion train so be careful hiking along the railroad tracks.

Pro Tip

This is a great trail to backpack and camp out overnight by the rushing falls. There are a couple of good camping sites before you cross the ridge and a few more at the bottom by the river.

Afternoon

  1. Hike back to Trailhead
  2. Drive back to Elkins

Dinner

Relax on the porch into the evening at Smoke on the Water BBQ and enjoy some delicious BBQ and a cool beverage. Scroll through your photos from the past few days and start planning your next getaway to Randolph County.
