Bear Heaven Campground
Forest Road 91, Elkins, WV 26241
Fourteen miles northeast of Elkins sits a picturesque string of primitive campsites, backdropped by the area’s idiosyncratic rocky cliffs.
Bear Heaven, known by the locals as Bear Haven, is a campground that lies on a ridge high on Shavers Mountain near Bowden. The area features rock outcroppings that offer unique landscapes. There are a lot of different boulders and climbing areas that are open to exploration. There are a few spots along the rock features to set up top-rope, but typically good anchors are scarce so bring some slings and webbing.
There are 8 single, primitive tent campsites available on a first come, first serve basis for a fee of $5 per night. The sites are spaced apart with a great distance between them, making the campsites uniquely private. Each campsite has a gravel parking spur, table, fire ring, tent pad, and lantern holder. There is a vault toilet, but there is not any water available so be sure to bring your own.
