Stuart Recreation Area

Stuart Recreation Area, known as Stuarts Park by the locals, is set in a mixed forest along the banks of the Shavers Fork of the Cheat River. The facility is open 24/7 during open season which is Mid-April to the beginning of October. Foot-travel, cross country skiing, and snowshoeing are welcome during the closed season. The campground is perched along a bend on the Shavers Fork River. Each campsite has a parking spur, table, fire ring, tent pad, lantern holder, and electric hookup. There are water spigots available throughout the campground as well as a shower facility. All campsites are suitable for tent and trailer camping and can accommodate a 53-foot tow/vehicle combination.

Just ahead of the Stuart Recreation Area entrance is a large grassy area with picnic tables, fire rings, accessible vault toilets and a water spigot for group tent camping. There is a 2-mile loop mountain bike/hiking trail, River Loop #119, that is perfect for visitors to enjoy spotting wildlife and birds.

Stuart Recreation Area offers plenty of tables and grills for picnicking. There is a small $5 fee per vehicle to access the day use area. Three pavilions on the premises can be reserved for family outings, weddings, or any special occasion. Bathroom facilities are also available throughout the area.

Stuarts is a large area that provides plenty of private space for everyone. River swimming is a lot of fun in the Shavers Fork as well as the plenty of trout to tempt anglers of all skill levels. Keep in mind, this area on the Shavers Fork River is catch and release and a West Virginia state fishing license is needed. A large, grassy meadow is perfect for playing frisbee. whiffle-ball games and enjoying time with friends and family.
