West Virginia’s natural beauty is on full display along the West Virginia Waterfall Trail, a journey that highlights some of the state’s most stunning waterfalls. With a Waterfall Trail passport, you can check in at each waterfall you visit, earning exclusive West Virginia gear as you progress. Whether you’re a seasoned explorer or new to outdoor adventures, the West Virginia Waterfall Trail offers something special for everyone.

Randolph County, tucked in the heart of West Virginia, boasts two of these hidden gems: Mill Creek Falls in Kumbrabow State Forest and the High Falls of Cheat. These lesser-known waterfalls offer a serene and rewarding experience for those willing to seek them out.

Mill Creek Falls at Kumbrabow State Forest

Mill Creek Falls is nestled within the highest forest in West Virginia, Kumbrabow State Forest, and is a true hidden treasure. Located 24 miles south of Elkins and seven miles south of Huttonsville, this 20-foot waterfall cascades into a tranquil pool surrounded by lush greenery. It’s an ideal spot for a peaceful retreat, with opportunities for fishing, swimming, or simply enjoying the serenity of the forest.

To find Mill Creek Falls, follow Rt 219-16 (Kumbrabow Forest Road) north and east until you intersect with Rt 219-38. Turn left and continue down to the cabin area, where you’ll find a parking area with access to the falls. A short walk down wooden steps will lead you to the falls, where the sound of water tumbling over rocks provides a soothing backdrop to the natural beauty around you. The best time to visit is in late spring or early summer when the water levels are high, and the surrounding forest is in full bloom.

While you’re in the area, take time to explore the rest of Kumbrabow State Forest. With its numerous hiking trails, picnic spots, and rustic cabins, it’s a perfect destination for a day trip or a weekend getaway. The forest’s elevation and seclusion make it a cool retreat in the summer and a snowy wonderland in the winter.

High Falls of the Cheat

For a more adventurous outing, head to the High Falls of Cheat, one of the most impressive waterfalls in the region. Located just four miles south of Glady on Forest Road 44, the High Falls of Cheat are accessible via a moderate hike or by taking The New Tygart Flyer passenger train.

The hike to High Falls begins at the High Falls Trailhead. You’ll start by crossing a footbridge and ascending Shavers Mountain through a switchback trail. The trail takes you through a large open field, where you will glimpse the West Fork Rail Trail before continuing into the woods. About halfway down the trail, you’ll start to hear the sound of the roaring river below. It’s about 2.5 miles to go up and over the mountain.

Once you make it to the railroad tracks you’ll take a right to continue following the blue trail markers to guide you the rest of the way to the High Falls of Cheat. There is a trail on the left side of the tracks for the most part, but some of the trail becomes large rocks from the railroad which can be hard on the ankles. It is illegal to walk on the railroad tracks and the train (The New Tygart Flyer) does travel them regularly. It is about a 20-25 minute, one mile hike to the High Falls.

On a lucky day if the train isn’t running, you will have the beautiful falls all to yourself for a nice lunch in the sunshine. If the wind is blowing you’ll even be able to feel the midst coming off of the falls. Take a photo of your adventure to share with us by using #RandolphWV.

The High Falls of Cheat is a fantastic spot for photographers, nature lovers, and anyone seeking the thrill of discovering one of West Virginia’s hidden natural wonders. The falls are most impressive after heavy rain or in the spring when the river swells with snowmelt. If you’re not up for the hike, the New Tygart Flyer train offers a leisurely and scenic ride directly to the falls, making it accessible to all ages and abilities.
