When Aira Loren Burkhart reflects on Fasnacht, the annual winter-ending celebration in Helvetia, the notions of fellowship, art, and culture immediately come to her mind.

Fasnacht, the unique winter-time event in Randolph County, West Virginia stands out with its diverse cultural activities suitable for all age groups. The tradition has firmly rooted itself as a yearly highlight, and Aira and her family have enjoyed participating in the event again and again.

We sat down with Aira, gaining a participant’s perspective on the upcoming event. Here’s what we discussed:

Why do you enjoy attending the event each year?
Aira: It’s very unique. Helvetia is such a remote community, but we see friends from around the state at Fasnacht. We want to support Appalachian cultural traditions, both old and new, and this event showcases traditional lifeways, history, art, music and fellowship. I grew up along the Gulf Coast of Alabama, in a community that celebrated Mardi Gras, so civic celebration at this time of year is important to me.

How many years have you participated?
Aira: 5 years, non consecutively.

Favorite part of the event?
Aira: I like the mask parade. The masks are incredible,  and we love to see people’s creativity on display. My daughter’s favorite part is making the masks.

What inspired your masks this year?
Aira: I tend to sketch out a lot of ideas, but lately I end up making masks featuring regional animals. I’ve made a crow, a toad, a frog,  and I’m working on a barred owl for this year.

How have your masks changed over the years?
Aira: A decade ago, I experimented with copper and leather masks, but a few years ago I followed a paper mache tutorial and fell in love with it. Recycled cardboard and cornstarch are abundant and versatile. I want to keep exploring and growing in this medium.

What has inspired past masks?
Aira: I feel a strong rapport with our native creatures. One of my earliest memories was seeing newts (red efts) on a camping trip. I’m always finding inspiration in our fauna.

Do you use any special techniques to create the masks?
Aira: Just cardboard, paper bags, cornstarch, paint and patience.

Any other memories you’d like to share about the event?
Aira: The first year we attended, we came straight from Snowshoe along the scenic highway*. It was snowing and the road had snow drifts and downed trees along it. After this rugged drive into the forest, we suddenly arrived!

*The scenic highway is not maintained from November to April. This is not a recommended route.

Other comments/thoughts about Fasnacht, or moments leading up to the event?
Aira: Arrive early, especially with kids, so you have time to explore, play, eat and relax. Visit the museum.

If you plan to stay late, bring a head lamp or flashlight and consider bringing blankets to sleep in your car. It’s a long drive to commercial lodging. If the weather is snowy, drive an appropriate vehicle and take your time. No prior experience necessary to dance. And if you aren’t feeling well, it’s better to stay home. You may not (probably won’t) have cell service there.
