Every year, the West Lawn of the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., becomes the center of holiday festivities as a magnificent tree is chosen to light up the nation’s capital. In 2023, the honor of providing the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree is bestowed upon the Monongahela National Forest, nestled in the heart of West Virginia. We’re so excited to announce that this year the tree is from Randolph County!

Between November 4th and 17th, the 63-foot Norway spruce will make its way from the Monongahela National Forest to the U.S. Capitol.

Join us in Elkins for the kick-off event – here are 4 reasons you will want to attend!

  1. It’s the Kick-Off Event

The entire tour will kick off on Saturday, November 4th, in Elkins, West Virginia, which also happens to be the headquarters of Monongahela National Forest. For the day, the city will transform into “Elfkins,” a place of enchantment and holiday cheer. The Elkins Depot Welcome Center will be the hub of festivities, where you can revel in the magic of the season.

What’s more, fans of Magnolia Network’s Barnwood Builders won’t want to miss an appearance by Mark Bowe. Mark will be at the AHF Products® booth, adding a touch of stardom to this wonderful event.

  2. Enjoy a Pre-Event Bike Ride

We can’t think of a better way to begin the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Event in Elkins than a Social Ride with MountainRides & Joey’s Bike Shop LLC.

When: Meet up at 12:30 p.m. in front of Joey’s Bike Shop.

Choose from 2 different two ride options:

     • Ride the Allegheny Highland Trail (AHT) Rail Trail at a casual 10-12mph pace.
     • Ride paved and gravel roads with a bit more vigor than the AHT option.

Rides will end at 4pm back in Downtown Elkins so you have ample time to grab a bite to eat before the U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree Event festivities kick-off at 5:45pm.

  3. A Mini Parade

Who doesn’t love a parade, especially when it involves an impressive Christmas tree? The parade will commence at 5:45 p.m. at the Elkins Federal Building/Post Office, making its way down Third Street towards the Elkins Depot. Join the excited onlookers lining the streets as bands, participants, and more add to the festive atmosphere. Our Town will be passing out United States and West Virginia flags for those that attend!

And here’s a unique twist – you’re invited to “join the parade” by filing in behind the Christmas tree trailer. It’s a short but spirited procession that culminates at the Elkins Depot Welcome Center, where the real magic awaits.

  4. Enjoy Free Activities

Following the parade, make your way to the Elkins Depot for a dose of holiday fun. Delight in free hot chocolate, snacks, and activities generously provided by local businesses and organizations in Elkins and Randolph County from 6 – 8 p.m. The event promises to be a heartwarming gathering, with invited guests, government officials, and even a few of our “Elfkins” elves in attendance. Best of all, it’s free and open to the public, ensuring that everyone can join in the festive celebrations.

The U.S. Capitol Christmas Tree journey is not just about transporting a tree; it’s about bringing communities together and spreading the joy of the holiday season. In Elkins, on November 4th, this journey begins in grand style, and you’re invited to be a part of it. So, don your festive spirit, bring your loved ones, and let’s kick off the holiday season in style!
