Day 1

Elkins

Discover the Monongahela National Forest Hot Spot – Bickle Knob

Breakfast

Stop by The Delmonte Market’s Crossing Coffee Bar for a handcrafted latte or chai tea and breakfast sandwhich. Snap a photo at the fabulous angel wings outside the shop and hit post!

Morning

  1. Stop by the Elkins Depot Welcome Center for maps, information, and to scout out your upcoming excursion to Bickle Knob and the Monongahela National Forest.
  2. Stuart Memorial Drive (Forest Road 91) is a 10.3-mile scenic route bordering the south side of Otter Creek Wilderness. It climbs from 2,200 feet near the Shaver’s Fork River to 3,900 feet at Stuart Knob, passing Bickle Knob and remaining above 3,000 feet to Alpena Gap. The unpaved road, suitable for most vehicles in good weather, traverses diverse habitats and offers access to trails, Bear Heaven Campground, and panoramic views from Bickle Knob. However, it may be rough in wet conditions and occasionally snowy through April.
  3. To get to Bickle Knob take 33 East out of Elkins and made the left onto Old Route 33 towards Stuart Recreation Area. Turn right onto Stuart Memorial Dr and then continue straight onto Forest Rd 91. Overall, the drive from Elkins is around 30 minutes. Be prepared to drive on narrow gravel roads!
  4. Park in the small lot at Bickle Knob and enjoy the overlook and short trail to the observation tower. Climb the tower for a gorgeous view of Randolph County!

Lunch

Tiptop has the aesthetic and ambiance you want on your Instagram Feed, or maybe you’ll think it’s worth a Reel – we wouldn’t argue with that! Enjoy a bagel sandwich (smoked turkey and gouda, anyone?) and a delectable matcha or cappuccino and… snap. that. pic.

Afternoon

  1. Check out the graffiti wall on Third Street, located in the alley across from Fancy Paws, and snap a photo!
  2. Shop some of Downtown Elkins’ niche shops, from bikes, pets, donuts, and art/sewing supplies!
  3. Discover more public art and downtown murals, including the iconic “Unexpectedly Cool” mural.

Dinner

The Forks Inn is the ultimate destination for your foodie and scenic Instagram posts! Featuring a varied and delectable menu filled with local and homemade specialties, you’ll be tempted to snap a photo of every dish your server presents. The artisanal cocktails set against the stunning mountain landscape create an idyllic backdrop for your Instagram feed!

Day 3

High Falls Trails

Hike to a Remote Waterfall–the High Falls of Cheat

Smoke on the Water BBQ

Breakfast

Since you’ll be burning those calories today, indulge a bit this morning. Grab some donuts from Byrd’s House of Donuts. Yeast or cake, filled or maple topped, you’ll be thinking about these donuts long after your vacation ends.

Morning

  1. Pack your lunch to enjoy at the High Falls before the trek back to your car. May we suggest more donuts?
  2. Drive to FS Road 44 High Falls Trail Trailhead
  3. The High Falls trail passes through old growth forest, and large hemlock as it winds through the saddle on Shavers Mountain. This is a beautiful yet challenging hike in the backcountry of the Monongahela National Forest. This 7-mile hike is not for the faint of heart due to the steady grade.
  4. Keep in Mind – The High Falls is a stopping point for The New Tygart Flyer excursion train so be careful hiking along the railroad tracks.

Pro Tip

This is a great trail to backpack and camp out overnight by the rushing falls. There are a couple of good camping sites before you cross the ridge and a few more at the bottom by the river.

Afternoon

  1. Hike back to Trailhead
  2. Drive back to Elkins

Dinner

Relax on the porch into the evening at Smoke on the Water BBQ and enjoy some delicious BBQ and a cool beverage. Scroll through your photos from the past few days and start planning your next getaway to Randolph County.
