Spectators come out in droves to admire the hundreds of cars ranging from old to new that line the streets of downtown Elkins as part of the Fourth of July weekend car show. Local groups Our Town and the Mountain State Street Machines club work together to bring the event back to Elkins annually. This event has been taking place since 1985 and here is what you can expect:

Classic Cars

Deemed as one of the largest car shows in the state of West Virginia, downtown Elkins truly becomes a spectacle of American muscle and classic hot rods during the Mountain State Forest Festival. For over 30 years, classics, hot rods, and muscle cars have been cruising into Elkins to celebrate Independence Day weekend. Take in the moving history from Davis Avenue to Third Street. Chat with the car enthusiasts and learn about the different makes and models that used to roam the street. The Mountain State Street Machine Auto Extravaganza isn’t just about the classic cars. You can also experience stunning new cars, souped up trucks, and shiny motorcycles. Some gearheads might even let you sit behind the wheel.

Don’t forget to vote for your favorite car at the event table set up just across the Elkins Depot Welcome Center.

Food & Craft

Mixed throughout the downtown you can also find delicious food and crafts from the area vendors. Food trucks will be scattered throughout the downtown, and various restaurants will be open to serve you as you escape from the heat of the sun. Typically there is a chicken burn held that you can secure tickets to prior to the weekend festivities. While pursuing through the cars, be sure to stop in the various specialty shops that fill downtown store fronts. Many of our specialty stores are stocked with arts and other products made by local West Virginia artists. For other fun ideas, check out the West Virginia Railroad Museum and the Appalachian Forest Discovery Center conveniently located at the end of Railroad Avenue.

Town Square

Scenic excursion trains operated by the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad will be pulling in and out of the Elkins Town Square located behind the Elkins Depot Welcome Center. Take a 4-hour ride on the New Tygart Flyer to split up your day of festivities. On Saturday evening, live music hosted by Our Town will take place at the Rotary Amphitheater in the Elkins Town Square. This years show will feature a variety of music from the band Santa Cruz. Don’t forget to bring your own chair! Immediately following the live music at around 9pm, one of the best fireworks shows in the region  will take place. If you are anywhere in downtown Elkins, you should be able to see the fireworks.
