Day 1

Elkins

Tour the Historic Buildings at Davis & Elkins College and the Kump House

Breakfast

Time to indulge in a delicious and hearty breakfast at The Lunch Box. From eggs, pancakes, oatmeal, and more, the coffee is always hot and the food fresh!

Morning

  1. Stop by the Elkins Depot Welcome Center for maps and more to help guide you on your historical adventure through Randolph County. Pick up the Elkins Historic Walking Tour to guide you along your stroll.
  2. Take in the historic depot, built circa 1908 by the Western Maryland Railway Company. If you visit on Thursday through Sunday, consider taking the vintage diesel engine on a scenic excursion to a remote waterfall – an unforgettable historic experience brought to you by the Durbin and Greenbrier Valley Railroad!
  3. Check out the newly renovated and historic Tygart Hotel, a building that dates back to 1906 and often referred to as Elkins’ only skyscraper.
  4. The Hotel Delmonte (now the Delmonte Market) was built in 1899 and has a unique history as a hotel and restaurant before becoming a community and visitor staple today.
  5. The elegant Ralph Darden House is worth a look and snapping a photo. The influence of the Queen Anne style of architecture and elements can be easily seen.
  6. Built in 1897 and thought to be one of the oldest church buildings still standing in Randolph County, the Shiloh Baptist Church was intended to solely serve Elkins-Randolph County’s black community.
  7. Another must-see historic building in downtown Elkins is the Darden Mill, formerly the Elkins Milling Company Plant. Constructed in 1902, the building was a space for owner, Ralph Darden, to operate his milling business, which dealt in grain, flour, coal, and building materials. Today, the Appalachian Forest Discovery Center and the West Virginia Railroad Museum are housed inside the Mill with compelling rotating exhibits for the public to view.

Lunch

Sit on the front porch of the Tygart Hotel at the Oxley House Cocktail Bar and Restaurant and people watch on bustling Davis Ave at this historic building! On Sunday you can enjoy a special brunch menu with a Mimosa or Bloody Mary.

Afternoon

  1. Hop in the car to visit some more of Elkins’ showstopping historical sites!
  2. Drive up to the historic Davis & Elkins College campus and tour Graceland Inn and Halliehurst Mansions and view some of the beautiful structures and buildings on campus, including the Ice House, Gate House, and more.
  3. Discover the Kump House, the historic home of Governor and Edna Kump, completed in 1925, by local famed contractor, T.R. Whiteman, whose son, Ernest Whiteman, a cabinet maker in Elkins. He called the house one of the largest, finest, and most modern residences of the city. The Kumps had the first automatic refrigerator with a compressor in the basement and “battleship” linoleum was installed in the first-floor kitchen.
  4. Take a walk through the Wees Historic District which includes historic residential homes, churches, a bronze equestrian statue of Henry Gassaway Davis, and the Randolph County Courthouse constructed of brick and faced with stone with contrasting smooth and textured stone trim. The courthouse features a rounded arch entrance in the Romanesque style.

Enjoy a night cap, juicy bratwurst or burger from Fox Hops Brewery, Elkins newest brewery!

Day 2

Helvetia

Breakfast

Choose a hot coffee or tea and enjoy sausage biscuits and gravy, a breakfast sandwich, fruit and yogurt or delicious pastries from Great Harvest Bakery and Cafe before heading South on US 250 Mill Creek.

Morning

  1. Head South on 219 and travel to Mill Creek, where you’ll take Helvetia-Adolph Rd/Mill St all the way into the historic and cultural community of Helvetia. 
  2. Set out on Helvetia’s Historic Hiking Trail, which is open to the public and a 2.5 mile hike that follows the trail taken by Helvetia’s original settlers.

Pro Tip.

Plan your visit around some of Helvetia’s best festivals and events, including the Helvetia Community Fair, Fasnacht, Annual Ramp Dinner, and Follow Your Bliss Festival.

Lunch

The Hütte Restaurant is sure to please your tastebuds. Indulge in Swiss cuisine including Bratwurst, Zurich Sauerbraten, Morgen Henalie, Swiss Cheese Soup, Swiss Muesli, and more! Reservations are highly recommended – (304) 924-6435.

Afternoon

  1. Take a stroll around the village of Helvetia or opt for an hour-long guided walking tour with local guide Dave Whipp ($30).
  2. Stop in at Swiss Roots, located inside the store, the Helvetia Post Office has served the community for 139 years. Also, experience the Fasnacht Mask Museum preserving the artifacts and history of the well-known Fasnacht celebration.

Dinner

Take the drive back to Elkins and take your pick… A few options for your consideration: Italian (Mama Mia Pie and Pasta), American (Beanders, Jimbo’s Place, or C.J. Maggie’s), Latin American (El Toro or El Gran Sabor), Southern (The Southern Kitchen). Stop by our award-winning brewery, Big Timber Brewing for a beer before calling it a night.

Day 3

Beverly

Breakfast

Grab some donuts or a fresh made breakfast sandwich from Byrd’s House of Donuts. Yeast or cake, filled or maple-topped, you’ll be thinking about these donuts long after your vacation ends.

Morning

  1. Begin your visit at the Beverly Heritage Center, open Wednesday through Sunday from 10am to 5pm. This museum provides extensive visitor information, including brochures and rack cards, and features a gift shop. Admission to the exhibit costs $5 for adults, while children under 12 can enter for free. Explore the captivating stories of Beverly and the First Campaign of the Civil War.
  2. Challenge yourself at the 1841 Randolph County Jail Escape Room! This exciting experience costs $20 per person and is limited to groups of up to 5 participants. You’ll have one hour to solve the puzzles and escape. For more information on group sizes and pricing, call 304-637-7424.

Afternoon

  1. Lace up your walking shoes and explore the historic town of Beverly. Start by picking up a self-guided walking tour brochure at the Beverly Heritage Center. As you wander through downtown, you’ll encounter historic buildings at every turn, from the Beverly Cemetery to the Lemuel Chenoweth House.
  2. Plan ahead to visit the Beverly during one of their special events or living history days – including Beverly Heritage Day, typically in July. Historic Beverly comes alive with reenactors and costumed interpreters to enhance your visit.

Dinner
